#MeetChardan: Daniil Gataulin, PhD, Senior Research Analyst

Daniil Gataulin, PhD joined Chardan’s equity research team in July 2021 and was recently promoted to the role of Senior Research Analyst. In this interview, Daniil shares his experience as a Senior Research Analyst and what he appreciates most about working at Chardan.

1. Congratulations on your recent promotion! Tell us about your path to becoming an analyst at Chardan.

After determining early on in my graduate career that I was not interested in continuing in an academic track, I began to actively explore “non-traditional” career paths for PhD graduates. I also got into the stock market during graduate school, taking advantage of new platforms such as Robinhood and M1 for trading. Initially, the areas that I was interested in were medical affairs, biopharma consulting, and equity research. As I continued to network with various professionals working in these areas, I was getting more and more interested in biotech equity research as it offered a perfect balance of science and my interest in the stock market. After graduating with a PhD from the University of Chicago I joined Raymond James in 2019 as an equity research associate, and in mid-2021 I joined Chardan, where there was a clear and accelerated path to becoming a covering analyst.

2. What are you most interested in scientifically?

My background is in DNA repair/recombination, and the area of science that is of most interest to me is how to apply various genetic manipulations to precisely address different diseases.

3. What makes a company interesting to you?

An interesting company is much more than a pipeline and a balance sheet. I like to learn about a company’s history and management’s background, their motivations for pursuing a given therapeutic area, and expertise and confidence to create a differentiated product with high probability of success.

4. What is your educational/post-doc background?

I received my B.S. in Cell Molecular Biology at Grand Valley State University (Grand Rapids area, MI), Master’s degree in Biotechnology at the Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago), and a PhD from the University of Chicago.

5. What is your current coverage?

My initial coverage consists of five ophthalmology companies: ADVM, AGTC, KOD, OCGN, and RGNX.

6. How do you spend your day?

I start the day at 6am (Central time zone) by going through the newsfeed for covered and related companies, then attend/present at our 7am research morning call. The rest of the day is highly variable and consists of any of the following: writing research reports, including initiation of coverage reports as well as collaborative pieces; building/updating financial models; speaking with investors; performing due diligence and speaking with management teams; attending scientific webinars, KOL calls, company-

sponsored R&D days, conferences; preparing for and hosting Chardan-sponsored conferences, and participating in Chardan Science Committee meetings.

7. What makes Chardan a good place to work?

Being surrounded by very bright and highly motivated people who strive to help each other and continue to make Chardan a better place to work; and management approachability, where I feel comfortable picking up a phone and calling management with questions or ideas, and seeing those ideas turn into action.

8. Anything else you’d like to share?

I am very impressed with how varied Chardan employees’ backgrounds and interests are (musicians, athletes, scientists…)
